As-salāmu 'alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Sister in Islam,

Hereunder are the answers to your queries:

1.      Salat-ut-Tasbeeh is a prayer that carries great reward for the one who prays it.[1] One is recommended to read Salat-ut-Tasbeeh whenever possible. Praying Salat-ut-Tasbeeh at the time of Tahajjud on a daily basis is highly commendable.

Abdullah bin al-Mubarak (Rahimahullah) has said that Salat-ut-Tasbeeh is a prayer that one should offer at all times and never be neglectful of.[2]

Before teaching his uncle the method of Salat-ut-Tasbeeh, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to him:

Translation: Oh uncle! Shall I not give you? Shall I not grant you? Shall I not award you? Shall I not do (mercy) on you that when you do ten things Allah will forgive your sins: of the future and of the past; new and old; those you have done by mistake and those you did knowingly; big and small; hidden and revealed.

(Sunan Abi Dawud)

At the end of the Hadith, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) remarked:

Translation: If you have the ability to pray it once each day then do so. And if you cannot, then once every week. If you cannot, then once each month. If you cannot, then once each year. If you (still) cannot, then (at least) once in your lifetime.

2.      Allah Ta'ala mentions in the Holy Quran:

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَوْقُوتًا

Translation: Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times.

(Surah Nisa – Verse 103)

From the above-mentioned verse it is understood that the prescribed Salahs may only be offered at specific times. In this aspect, Salat-ut-Tahajjud is no different to the prescribed Salahs, as it may only be offered within the time of Esha. The difference is that Salat-ut-Tahajjud should be prayed in the last third of the night while Esha should be prayed in the early part of the night.

The time of Tahajjud terminates simultaneously with the time of Esha[3] i.e., when the time of Fajr commences. Fajr commences when the broad whiteness in the sky becomes visible.[4]

If the time of Fajr commences whilst one is praying Salat-ut-Tahajjud, then he should bring his Salah to an end. His Salah will be valid. However, he should ensure that he prays Salat-ut-Tahajjud at an earlier time in the night, to avoid exceeding the time of Tahajjud.[5]

If one commenced two Rakats of Tahajjud Salah during Fajr time, his Salah will take the place of the two Sunnats before Fajr.  Accordingly, it will be Makruh for him to perform his Sunnats thereafter.[6]

3.      Consider the following Ahadith:

إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ

Translation: Actions are judged by their intentions.[7] (Saheeh Al-Bukhari 1)

If a person had made all arrangements to wake up and pray Salat-ut-Tahajjud but eventually overslept, he will receive the reward of a person who woke up and prayed Salat-ut-Tahajjud.

4.      Salah is an integral part of Islam. Salah is one of the most important acts of worship in a Muslims' life. Much emphasis has been placed on Khushu' and Khudu' (concentration and devotion) in Shariah when it comes to Salah.

One should train oneself to concentrate in Salah to the best of one's ability. One should focus on the words that one recites in Salah. This is the prescription that Hadhrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (Rahimahullah) has given for attaining concentration in Salah.

One should thwart all evil thoughts to the best of one's ability. It is highly possible that one who finds it difficult to attain concentration in Salah, is affected by the actions of Shaytan.

In order to increase concentration in Salah one should remember that nothing should be recited without any intention, rather every word that you recite should have a consideration and intent behind it.

For example, after saying "Allahu Akbar" when you stand, then think in your mind that I am now saying "Subhanak Allahumma", then think and pay attention that I am now saying "Wa bihamdika". Keep concentrating that now you are uttering "Wa tabarak asmuka". Just like this keep focusing independently on every word that you recite and then say "Alhamdulillah" and pay attention to the wordings.

Do the same when you recite your Surah as well. When you go into Ruku focus that you are saying "Subhana Rabiy al-Adhim". Hence, whatever you utter from your mouth, do it with attention. Do this method throughout the Salah.

In sha Allah through this your thoughts will not waver, and then within days it will become easy to concentrate and you will feel inclined towards Salah and will also start to taste the sweetness of Salah. (Hayat-al-Abrar Pg. 237)

5.      The Mustahabb (recommended) time to pray Esha is before the first third of the night passes.[8] It is permitted for one to take a nap prior to the Mustahabb time and then pray Esha.

And Allah Ta'āla Knows Best
