Title

My mother is unable to fast due to illness - Can she pay fidyah?

Question

Asalamualikum,

My mother’s health worsens when she fasts. She’s diabetic and has high blood pressure. Fasting makes her extremely weak. As a result, she kept very few fasts this ramadan. Can she pay the fidyah or does she still have to keep those fasts?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

You state your mother was unable to fast this Ramadan due to her extreme weakness.

In principle, if a person is unable to fast due to old age or a chronic illness, he will be excused from fasting.[1] If the person is expected to recover from such illness, then it will be necessary to perform Qadha for each missed fast. However, if there no hope of recovery, then the Fidyah must be paid for every missed fast.[2]

Accordingly, your mother should try to make Qadha of the fasts during winter when the days are shorter.[3] If she is still unable to perform Qadha due to her illness, only then must she pay the Fidyah for each fast that was missed/broken.

The fidya of each fast is half a Saa (1.75kg or 3.86 lb) of wheat (or its monetary equivalent) which is equivalent to the amount of Sadaqatul Fitr in your country.
