Title

Do I consider gold inflation when paying my remaining Zakat?

Question

Aoa , a friend referred me to you . My question is a little completed and I hope I am able to get my point across. It’s regarding zakat.  I am based in US since three years and mostly discharge my zakat by the end of the year once it’ completes its term. Just like the usual , my term for 2020 is going to be completed in aug but I had already given away the major portion in Ramadan due to the current situation I felt many would be in need however I kept the remaining  amount aside ( Not physically as you know here it’s hard to carry the cash but in my accounts with the rest of the money with an intention that once I go in December to my homeland I will dispose it off since I have some really needy people in mind ) the delay in zakat was because of this purpose only , I was gonna go in summers but due to COVID I couldn’t . My question is do I have to pay off the remaining amount with the current rate of gold now considering the gold has drastically shot up within days? My Intentions were already clear and I had already done the maths for the Due amount Which was according to the previous rate but the only difference is that I didn’t take the amount out physically.

I would like to know what will be the rate applied to the renaming amount now. (although kept aside in my accounts way before the gold went up)

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, if one has 87.48 grams of gold or more for one lunar year, zakat will be compulsory on that gold at 2.5% or its equivalent value at that given time.[1]

Accordingly, if your Zakat was due in August, you will use the value of gold in August to calculate your Zakat.[2]
