When should a believer have Tawakkul?

In what circumstances does tawakkul become; haraam, necessary, recommended, obligatory ?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Tawakkul means to place our trust in Allah Ta’ala.

Tawakkul also brings calm to the heart. It is the source of contentment, ease, and protection that Allah grants to the believers. It is a means to come closer to Allah and to raise one’s level of Iman and Yaqin.

Allah Ta’ala repeatedly commands us in the Qur’an to place our trust and reliance on Him. See the following:

مَا أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَمَن يُؤْمِن بِاللَّهِ يَهْدِ قَلْبَهُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ - 64:11

وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ ۚ فَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَىٰ رَسُولِنَا الْبَلَاغُ الْمُبِينُ - 64:12

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ - 64:13

No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah - He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things.

And obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon Our Messenger is only [the duty of] clear notification.

Allah - there is no deity except Him. And upon Allah let the believers rely.


...وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مَخْرَجًا - 65:2

وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَالِغُ أَمْرِهِ ۚ قَدْ جَعَلَ اللَّهُ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدْرًا - 65:3

And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out.

And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.

عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ لَوْ أَنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَوَكَّلُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ حَقَّ تَوَكُّلِهِ لَرُزِقْتُمْ كَمَا تُرْزَقُ الطَّيْرُ تَغْدُو خِمَاصًا وَتَرُوحُ بِطَانًا ‏"

Umar bin Al-Khattab narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:

"If you were to rely upon Allah with the required reliance, then He would provide for you just as a bird is provided for, it goes out in the morning empty, and returns full." (Tirmidhi-2344)


The above mentioned Hadith teaches us that Tawakkul begins with the heart’s firm reliance on Allah. Thereafter, strengthened with Tawakkul, the believer sets forth on the path to attain his goal.

By submitting one’s heart and giving complete authority to Allah, one also attains the love of Allah:

فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لَانفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ ۖ فَاعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ ۖ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ - 3:159

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

Putting one’s trust in Allah (Tawakkul) involves two things: 

1.      Taking appropriate measures; Tawakkul does not mean to refrain from taking measures.

The world we live in is Darul Asbab (place of adopting the means). It is a place of cause and effect. We thus adopt the necessary means for our needs and thereafter place our trust in Allah Ta’ala for the outcome.


2.      Depending on Allah and believing that He is the One Who causes the measures we take to be effective.

It is necessary to always place our trust in Allah.

However, only having Tawakkul or reliance on Allah Ta’ala without using the means is not required. See the following narration:

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ كَانَ أَهْلُ الْيَمَنِ يَحُجُّونَ وَلاَ يَتَزَوَّدُونَ وَيَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ الْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ، فَإِذَا قَدِمُوا مَكَّةَ سَأَلُوا النَّاسَ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى (وَتَزَوَّدُوا فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ الزَّادِ التَّقْوَى)

Ibn Abbas narrates: The people of Yemen used to come for Hajj and used not to bring enough provisions with them and used to say that they depend on Allah. On their arrival in Medina they used to beg the people, and so Allah revealed, "And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is the fear of Allah." (Bukhari-1523)


Similarly, not having Tawakkul and reliance on Allah Ta’ala and relying solely on the means or someone other than Allah to fulfil one’s needs is not permissible.

This is not permissible because it goes against Tawhid for one to rely on other than Allah. This is similar to one who seeks the recommended or necessary medical treatment for an ailment. However, he places his trust solely on the means i.e. the medicine or the doctor, but does not acknowledge or trust in Allah as the One who ultimately provides the cure through those very means, giving them their effectiveness and potency.
