Fatwa: # 45895
Category: Supplications (Duaas)
Country: African Country
Date: 7th August 2020

Must the exact words of the dua be used or can they be changed?

Is it better to read the exact dua as found in Hadeeth, or can words be added. For example, the dua

اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني"

But most people read an extra word or sometimes two words. They add kareem and Raheem.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is preferable to recite the exact words of the Dua that is narrated in the Hadeeth. In the above example it is best to recite the Dua as found in the Hadeeth which is:

اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني"

We could not find the words “Kareem or Raheem” in any Hadeeth. However, if these words are recited and added in the dua, it will be permissible.
