Predictions in sports - Is this permissible?

Assalamualaikum, respected mufti sb

Someone asking is predictions haraam...  Particularly asking if predictions in sport is haraam, for example a certain team will win the league this year without any betting, just a casual conversation among friends... Can we predict with equal standings of four teams who will qualify for the champions league. What is the advice to give him Jzkl

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In the beginning of the 18th Juz of the Quraan, Almighty Allah Ta’ala describes the qualities of the believers. One of the qualities of the believers is,

{وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ} [المؤمنون: 3]

Translation: Those who turn away from futility (talks and acts that have no benefit).

Rasululullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has stated:

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال‏:‏ قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏:‏"‏ من حسن إسلام المرء تركه ما لا يعنيه‏" (جامع الترمذي 67)

Translation: Hazrath Abu Hurairah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reported: Rasululullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, "It is from the excellence of (a believer's) Islam that he should shun that which is of no concern to him".

The sports of today have many unislamic factors in them. Music and intermingling of sexes are in the forefront of the sports of today which are clearly haram and have far reaching negative consequences on ones spirituality. The sports of today focus on the adoration of the players. This leads to one following and imitating their favorite players. This is clearly haram as it is not permissible to maintain bosom relationship with non muslims that compromises the basic values of a person. Present day sports also have elements of nationalism. In Islam, while we believe in patriotism, this is not at the expense of our Islamic values and principles.

Furthermore, the predictions of sports come with a background of knowing the details of the sport and observing it closely. All this falls in the category of amusement and entertainment and not permissible. A believer’s life should be focused on his personal win in the Akhirah and in the court of Allah Ta’ala. That is the real win.

Allah Ta’ala says:

{وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا} [الأحزاب: 71]

Translation: Whoever has obeyed Allah Ta’ala has succeeded tremendously.

What will the win of any team benefit us in the Akhirah.

We are in the game of winning in the Akhirah.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
