Title

Can one have the name of Allah taa'la as a ringtone?

Question

As salaamu Alaikum
Respected Mufti /Maulana .

Can one have the name of Allah taa'la as a ringtone or if the name of Allah taa'la is part of nasheed or  poetry

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The names of Allah Taalah deserve utmost respect. Allah Taalah says in the Quran:

اِنَّمَا المُؤمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ اِذَا ذُكِرَ اللّٰهُ وَجِلَت قُلُوبُهُم وَاِذَا تُلِيَت عَلَيهِم اٰيٰتُه زَادَتهُماِيمَانًا وَّعَلٰى رَبِّهِم يَتَوَكَّلُونَ ﴿8:2﴾

Translation: “The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely”.(Surah Al Anfal:2)

When we hear the name of Allah, our hearts ought to respond with awe and reverence. That is not so in a ringtone.

It is disrespectful and thus not permissible to use the name of Allah in a ringtone. It is permissible to use a nasheed or poetry as a ringtone if it does not have music in it.

However it is advisable to have a standard ringtone (which is not musical), vibration, beeps, a voice recording or sounds of, for example, water flowing, birds chirping etc. After all, the purpose of the tone is to alert one of incoming calls, and only lasts for a few seconds.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best

وقال الذين كفروا لا تسمعوا لهذا القرآن والغوا فيه لعلكم تغلبون (41:26)

And the disbelievers said: “do not listen to the Qur’an and rather make noise, so that you do not get overpowered (i.e. by the words of the Qur’an)”

{ ذلك ومن يعظم شعائر الله فإنها من تقوى القلوب (32الحج) }

If one observes the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, then such things emanate from the piety of the hearts. [22:32]
