Title

Is it permissible to wear black garments on Eid?

Question

Assalamu alaikum Warahamatullahi wabarakatuhu,

Dear Mufti Sab,

Ay Allah accept your efforts.

I heard our Nabi sallalahu alaihi wasallam use to wear black dress during safar. I don't know how far it is true. Is it allowed to wear black kandura?

Is it Sunnah of our prophet? If allowed, is it advisable to wear for Eid?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Brother,

We could not locate any specific mention of Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) donning a black dress during safr. However, on the occasion of Fath-u-Makkah (conquest of Makkah), Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) donned a black turban.

Translation: Hadhrat Jabir bin Abdillah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reported that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) entered on the day of Victory of Mecca wearing a black turban on his head.

Furthermore, Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) wore a black woollen garment:

Translation: Hadhrat Aa'isha (Radhiyallahu Anha) reported that Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) went out one morning wearing a blanket made of (camel's or sheep's) black hair with patterns of camel saddles upon it.

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) liked white clothing. It is stated in a Hadith:

Translation: Hadhrat Ibn 'Abbas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reported:

I heard Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) saying, "Put on white clothes because they are the best; and use them for shrouding your dead."

It is therefore advisable to wear white clothing.[2] However, it is permissible to wear black clothing on Eid if one does not regard wearing black clothing to be compulsory or black clothing is not a custom of some misguided sects like shia’s who wear black clothing in Muharram.
