Title

I broke my fast due to severe illness - How many Qadha do i keep?

Question

I am fasting my qadhaa for Ramdhaan , I broke the qadhaa because of severe illness due to which I needed to take medication. Do I now have to make two qadhaas , one for the original qadhaa and one for the breaking of the qadhaa or does 1 suffice?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, if one fears that one will become sick by fasting or one’s sickness will worsen by continuing to fast, then such a person is excused from fasting. However, such a person is obligated to keep one Qadha fast for each missed/broken fast when one recovers.[1]

Accordingly, you will keep one Qadha fast for every fast that you missed or have broken in the month of Ramadan.
