Writing coursework’s for a company who then provides these papers to students: Is this income Halaal?

my daughter in law is working from home writing course work for a company that then provides the papers to students who then forward these papers on to the university as work done by the students.

My daughter in law works directly with the company and not the students.

Is this permissible (HALLAL) and is her earnings from this kind of work allowed according to islamic law.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We commend you on your Deeni concern, pertaining to you daughter in-laws income.

Coursework is a practical work or study done by a student in partial fulfilment of a degree or training. This method of examination has been used for the student to reflect their understanding of the subject matter.

The mechanism you refer to is termed, ‘Contract Cheating’, wherein a student engages with a third-party to complete assignments. It occurs when someone other than the student completes an assignment which the student then submits for assessment/credit.[i]

If a student is caught within the act he will be subject to the rules of plagiarism and may be suspended from studies altogether.[ii]

As for the legal status of such companies (essay mills), is a discussion still not resolved. Countries like New Zealand and the United States have banned such companies. As for countries like England, such companies remain Legal, although there is currently a petition to change UK law as current legislation has been found to be ineffective at tackling the problem.

In the enquired situation, your daughter-in-law has no direct link to the potential academic dishonesty the student may carry out. Therefore, her employment is permissible according to Shariah and the income earned will be Halal.

If your daughter-in-law comes to know that the student will use the paper to submit it as his work, then we advise against it. This will be assisting in deception.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
