Title: Is zakaat binding upon me?

Question

Assalaamu A'laikum

Category : Zakaat

Suppose that I got 3 Lac Rupees from some where and I become Sahib-e-Nisaab on 13 Rajab. My salary is Rs. 2 Lac which is fully consumed in my monthly expances every month. Now on next year I got my salary on 12 Rajab and on the next day my year got completed and on that day (13 Rajab) I have 5 Lac Rupees in total.

Now the situation is that 3 Lac is my actual saving and 2 Lac is my monthly salary that is for my monthly expances.

The question is whether i have to pay Zakaat on 5 Lac (Total amount on year completion) or on 3 Lac (actual saving)?

JazakAllah

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykumwa-rahmatullāhiwa-barakātuh.

The two lakhs for your monthly expenses falls in the category of basic needs (haajat-e-asliyyah). You will not have to pay zakat on your salary of two lakhs if it is required for your monthly expenses 1. Zakat will only be paid on the three lakhs. The nisab is calculated after subtracting all the necessary expenses along with any immediate liabilities.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
