Title: Is it permissible to attend a ‘Bohri’ Wedding?

Question

 

One of my university friends is a bori and he invited me to his wedding which is taking place in their "jamaat khana". He says that there will be segregation of males and females there. Is it permissible for me to attend the wedding? What will be better for me.

Also, his wedding card starts with the statement "In the Name of Allah & Vasila-e-Panjatan Pak (A.S.) and Benedictions of His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb (T.U.S.) & His Successor Syedi Mufaddal Bhai Saheb Saifuddin (T.U.S)" Can u please tell me the explanation of this statement. What does it mean. Do these words constitute shirk?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The Dawoodi Bohra are a subsect of Ismā'īlī Shī'ah; as such, they are non-Muslims[1]. Also, going to their Jamat Khana is impermissible.[2]

 

As far as the statement on the wedding card:

  • "In the name of Allah...": No problem
  • "...&Vasila-e-Panjtan Pak (A.S.)": Wasīlah (Vasila) means to use a pious person's name as a means of intercession between yourself and Allāh. The permissible way of doing Wasilah would be, "O Allāh, I ask You by Your Prophet, Mohammed Sallallāhu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam, to fulfill such and such need of mine." This mode of Wasīlah was taught to 'Uthmān bin Hunaif Radiallāhu 'Anhu by Nabi Sallallāhu 'Alihi Wa Sallam, as established in Jami' Al Timrizi.[3] "Panjtan Pak" (Literally: The Pure Five) refers to Nabi Sallallāhu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam, 'Ali, Fātimah, Hasan, and Husain Radiallāhu 'Anhum. However, the Bohra give the position of Imāmat (a divine position, the purport of which is Kufr) to Hasan and Husain Radiallāhu 'Anhumā, and consider 'Ali Radiallāhu 'Anhu to be the rightful Khalifah after Nab Sallallāhu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam. Therefore, it is difficult to say what is intended by the "Vasila" they are making. Asking them will not be of benefit either, as Taqiyyah (lying and deception) is meritorious in their religion.
  • "Benedictions...": To take Barakah
  • "Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb": He is the 52nd "Dā'il-Mutlaq" of the Bohra. The Dā'il-Mutlaq office was established by the 21st Mustaali Imam, Taiyab abi al-Qasim. The Da'ī represents the Imam and has full authority to govern the believing community in all matters.
  • "(T.U.S.)": Abbreviation of "Tawwala Allāhu 'Umrahu Al Sharīf." Meaning, "May Allah lengthen his life."
  • "Syedi Mufaddal Bhai Saheb Saifuddin": He is the son of Mohammed Burhanuddin (the 52nd Dāil-Mutlaq mentioned above) and his successor to the post of Dāil-Mutlaq.

In light of all the above, it will be impermissible to attend this wedding.

و في اليتيمية: يكره للمسلم الدخول في البيعة و الكنيسة، و إنما يكره من حيث أنه مجمع الشياطين، لا من حيث أنه ليس له حق الدخول (التاتارخانية، كتاب الكراهية الفصل السادس عشر)

(قَوْلُهُ، وَلَا يَحْلِفُونَ فِي بُيُوتِ عِبَادَتِهِمْ) ؛ لِأَنَّ الْقَاضِيَ لَا يَحْضُرُهَا بَلْ هُوَ مَمْنُوعٌ عَنْ ذَلِكَ كَذَا فِي الْهِدَايَةِ، وَلَوْ قَالَ الْمُسْلِمُ لَا يَحْضُرُهَا لَكَانَ أَوْلَى لِمَا فِي   التَّتَارْخَانِيَّة يُكْرَهُ لِلْمُسْلِمِ الدُّخُولُ فِي الْبِيعَةِ وَالْكَنِيسَةِ، وَإِنَّمَا يُكْرَهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ إنَّهُ مَجْمَعُ الشَّيَاطِينِ لَا مِنْ حَيْثُ إنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَهُ حَقُّ الدُّخُولِ وَالظَّاهِرُ أَنَّهَا      تَحْرِيمِيَّةٌ؛ لِأَنَّهَا الْمُرَادَةُ عِنْدَ إطْلَاقِهِمْ، وَقَدْ أَفْتَيْت بِتَعْزِيرِ مُسْلِمٍ لَازَمَ الْكَنِيسَةَ مَعَ الْيَهُودِ (البحر الرائق، كتاب الدعوى)

          يؤخذ من التعليل بأنه محل الشياطين كراهة الصلاة في معابد الكفار؛ لأنها مأوى الشياطين كما صرح به الشافعية. ويؤخذ مما ذكروه عندنا، ففي البحر من كتاب            الدعوى عند قول الكنز: ولا يحلفون في بيت عباداتهم. وفي التتارخانية يكره للمسلم الدخول في البيعة والكنيسة، وإنما يكره من حيث إنه مجمع الشياطين لا من           حيث إنه ليس له حق الدخول اهـ قال في البحر: والظاهر أنها تحريمية؛ لأنها المرادة عند إطلاقهم، وقد أفتيت بتعزير مسلم لازم الكنيسة مع اليهود اهـ فإذا حرم               الدخول فالصلاة أولى، وبه ظهر جهل من يدخلها لأجل الصلاة فيها (الشامي، كتاب الصلوة)
