In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, we would like to point out that watching television itself is impermissible as it is associated with many sins and evils, including looking at uncovered women and listening to music. [1]

With respect to your question, the act of unnecessarily viewing shirk and kufr is certainly an abominable and sinful act. [2] Allah Ta‘ālā says in the Qur’ān while describing the righteous believers:

والذين لا يشهدون الزور

“And those who do not witness falsehood.” (25:72)

One of the meanings of the “falsehood” mentioned in this verse is shirk. [3] Hence, one must abstain from anything associated with kufr or shirk even if it is watching acts of kufr and shirk.

The rationale behind the prohibition of viewing acts of kufr and shirk on the television is that when a person consistently views such programmes, they may desensitise him from the evils contained in them. The resentment towards shirk that a person may have initially felt may diminish gradually as a consequence of viewing these programmes. As Muslims, we are sensitive to our faith (‘aqeedah) and values. We do not compromise on our ‘aqeedah and do not show complacency to anything that may harm our ‘aqeedah.

قوله تعالى: { وَٱلَّذِينَ لاَ يَشْهَدُونَ الزُّورَ } أي لا يحضرون الكذب والباطل ولا يشاهدونه. والزور كل باطل زُوّر وزُخرِف، وأعظمه الشرك وتعظيم الأنداد. وبه فسر الضحاك وابن زيد وابن عباس. وفي رواية عن ابن عباس أنه أعياد المشركين

عن عمرو بن مرة في قوله لا يشهدون الزور لا يمالئون أهل الشرك على شركهم ولا يخالطونهم رواه أبو الشيخ وسكت عنه ابن تيمية فى الاقتضاء

وجوز أن يراد بالزور ما يعم كل شيء باطل مائل عن جهة الحق من الشرك والكذب والغناء والنياحة ونحوها فكأنه قيل: لا يشهدون مجالس الباطل لما في ذلك من الإشعار بالرضا به، وأيضاً من حام حول الحمى يوشك أن يقع فيه
