I work in a construction repair industry. Fasting is a very difficult for me, will I be excused?


Assalamu Alaikum,


My question is in regards to fasting during the month of Ramadan. I work in construction/repair industry, I mostly spend my days outdoors in the heat with no source of shade for long hours at a time tempuratures over 100 degrees. Being that it is also summer it's extermely difficult, if not impossible to fast without causing harm to myself or others on the job. I have to carry heavy equipment, climb ladders, go on roofs, and work with electciral and high pressure gas systems. I wish I could fast and get all the benifits during the month of Ramadan but unfortunetly I am not able..Is there anyway I can make up these fasts or should I pay some come of money for the missed days during Ramadan? Please advise, thank you


In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful 
As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh

In principle, fasting in the month of Ramadān is obligatory for every adult Muslim.[1]It is not permissible for a Muslim to break the fast without a legitimate shar’i reason such as sickness or travel. A person may experience great difficulty during the fast but one must exercise patience and seek help from Allah.[2]

Consider the following Ahādith on the importance of the month of Ramadan:


عن أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم "‏ أَتَاكُمْ رَمَضَانُ شَهْرٌ مُبَارَكٌ فَرَضَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ صِيَامَهُ تُفْتَحُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ السَّمَاءِ وَتُغْلَقُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ الْجَحِيمِ وَتُغَلُّ فِيهِ مَرَدَةُ الشَّيَاطِينِ لِلَّهِ فِيهِ لَيْلَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ مَنْ حُرِمَ خَيْرَهَا فَقَدْ حُرِمَ (سنن النسائي: 2106)

Abu Hurairah (Radiyallāhu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah () said: 'There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast. In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and every devil is chained up. In it Allah has a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived. (Sunan an-Nasa'i :2106)


عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ كُلُّ عَمَلِ ابْنِ آدَمَ لَهُ، إِلاَّ الصَّوْمَ فَإِنَّهُ لِي، وَأَنَا أَجْزِي

بِهِ، وَلَخَلُوفُ فَمِ الصَّائِمِ أَطْيَبُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنْ رِيحِ الْمِسْكِ ‏

(مصنف عبد الرزاق الصنعاني:7891)

The Messenger of Allah () said: "(Allah said), 'Every good deed of Adam's son is for him except fasting; it is for Me. and I shall reward (the fasting person) for it.' Verily, the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better to Allah than the smell of musk."  (Musannaf-abdu-al-arazāq 7891)

It is understood from the above mentioned Ahādīth that Muslims must endeavor to fast in Ramadān. You may request your boss to grant you a leave in Ramadān or he reduce your workload during Ramadān.

تفسير الثعلبي = الكشف والبيان عن تفسير القرآن ط دار التفسير (1/ 241) [1]

: {فَمَنْ شَهِدَ مِنْكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ} [البقرة: 185] ونزلت العزمة في إيجاب الصوم، وعلى هذا القول معاذ بن جبل، وأنس بن مالك.

[البقرة: 183] الآية ثم قال {فمن شهد منكم الشهر فليصمه} [البقرة: 185] وأما السنة فقوله - عليه الصلاة والسلام - «بني الإسلام على خمس» وذكر منها «صوم رمضان» وأما الإجماع فإن الأمة أجمعت على أن صوم رمضان فريضة محكمة


بدائع الصنائع في ترتيب الشرائع (2/ 97) [2]

وقد روي عن النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أنه قال: «يفطر المريض، والحبلى إذا خافت أن تضع ولدها، والمرضع إذا خافت الفساد على ولدها» .

وقد روي عن النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - أنه قال: «إن الله وضع عن المسافر شطر الصلاة وعن الحبلى، والمرضع الصيام» وعليهما القضاء ولا فدية عليهما عندنا.


مختصر القدوري (ص: 63)

ومن كان مريضا في رمضان فخاف إن صام زاد مرضه أفطر وقضى وإن كان مسافرا لا يستضر بالصوم فصومه أفضل وإن أفطر وقضى جاز وإن مات المريض أو المسافر وهما على حالهما لم يلزمهما القضاء وإن صح المريض أو أقام المسافر ثم ماتا لزمهما القضاء بقدر الصحة والإقامة


الجامع في أحكام الصيام والاعتكاف والحج والعمرة (ص: 32)

العقل؛ فليس الإفاقة من الجنون أو الإغماء أو النوم من شروط صحة الصوم؛ لأنه يصح بدونها؛ لكنه من شروط الوجوب(3)؛ إذ لا يجب الصوم على المجنون إن استغرق فقدان العقل كل شهر رمضان
